Quick answer. Amazon Lightning Deals are limited availability promotions that run for a set period or until all deal units are claimed. To catch one, watch the deal status and timer, add the item to your cart while the offer is available, then complete checkout within 15 minutes using Proceed to Checkout. Joining a waitlist does not promise you will get the deal. [1] [2]

What an Amazon Lightning Deal actually is

A Lightning Deal is a time sensitive Amazon promotion with limited availability. Amazon says the offer is available until its timer ends or all deal units are claimed, and it is generally limited to one per customer. [1]

Amazon’s terms describe these as short time offers that may carry a substantial discount. They normally apply to one unit of the product unless the deal states otherwise, and if inventory remains after the discounted units are gone, the item can still be sold at its regular Amazon price. [2]

Amazon’s seller guide says Lightning Deals run for 4 to 12 hours [3]. You can find active offers through Amazon’s Today’s Deals area [1], while our new deals today page gives you another place to browse recent deal listings.

What you see when a Lightning Deal is active

Amazon gives you several pieces of information to judge both the price and how much of the offer remains. The exact combination depends on the deal’s status. [1]

  • A Lightning Deal badge on the item.
  • Available variations, such as size or color.
  • The discount amount and final deal price before tax.
  • A status bar showing the percentage of deals already claimed.
  • A timer showing how long you have left to add the item to your cart.
  • An Add to Cart, Join Waitlist, Sold Out or All Discounts Claimed button depending on availability.

How to claim a Lightning Deal

There are two clocks to pay attention to. First, the item must reach your cart before the overall Lightning Deal ends. After you add it, Amazon gives you 15 minutes to complete the purchase before that reserved deal can be lost. [1] [2]

This is different from entering a code at checkout. Lightning Deal discounts apply automatically, and Amazon’s seller guide says promo codes do not apply to Lightning Deals. [3]

  1. Open the deal Open the Lightning Deal and make sure the variation you want is included in the offer.
  2. Check the status and timer Look at the percentage claimed and the remaining deal time before deciding whether you want the item.
  3. Add it to your cart Use Add to Cart while discounted units remain. Adding the item starts the separate 15 minute purchase window. [1]
  4. Use Proceed to Checkout Go through the Shopping Cart and select Proceed to Checkout. Amazon’s terms say using 1-Click prevents the Lightning Deal discount from applying. [2]
  5. Finish within the cart window Place the order before the 15 minute cart limit and the overall deal limit have passed.

How the Lightning Deal waitlist works

A Join Waitlist button can appear when all discounted units have either been purchased or are temporarily sitting in other shoppers’ carts. A waitlist position is not a reservation and does not mean you will receive the discount. Places on the list are limited, and the waitlist ends when the promotion ends. [1] [2]

If your turn arrives, Amazon shows an alert. With notifications enabled in the latest Amazon app, Amazon also says you can receive a notification. You then have a limited period to add the item to your cart and 15 minutes to finish the purchase, or the opportunity moves to the next shopper. [1]

If you are browsing several short lived offers, deals ending soon can help you separate time sensitive listings from deals you can consider later.

What goes wrong with Lightning Deals

Most Lightning Deal problems come from the timing rules, checkout method, account restrictions or limited deal inventory. Knowing which rule you hit is more useful than repeatedly trying the same action.

Common Lightning Deal problems
What happened Why What to try
You used 1-Click and the deal price disappeared Amazon’s terms say Lightning Deals must be redeemed through Proceed to Checkout from the Shopping Cart. Return to the regular cart process and use Proceed to Checkout if the deal is still available.
The item was in your cart but the discount disappeared The 15 minute purchase window may have expired. Check whether the Lightning Deal is still available. If not, the regular price may be the only remaining option.
The deal shows Sold Out or All Discounts Claimed All discounted units have been claimed. Use Join Waitlist if Amazon offers that option, or decide whether the regular price is acceptable.
You claimed the deal with one account and tried to buy with another Lightning Deal discounts are not transferable between accounts. Use the same account that claimed the deal. [1]
The page says Checking deal status Amazon is checking eligibility on a first-come basis. Do not reload or refresh while that message is showing. [1]
You expected a promo code to lower the Lightning Deal price again Amazon’s seller guide says promo codes do not apply to Lightning Deals. Judge the automatic deal price on its own. For separate code offers, see today's Amazon promo codes. [3]

Is the Lightning Deal price actually good?

A Lightning Deal label tells you that Amazon is running a limited promotion, but it does not tell you whether the price is unusually low compared with the product’s recent history. Before adding an item just because the status bar is filling, compare the deal price with past prices using our Amazon price history guide.

For example, suppose an item has a regular price of $30.00 and a Lightning Deal price of $22.50. The difference is $7.50, and $7.50 divided by $30.00 equals 0.25, so the deal is 25 percent below that regular price. That tells you the displayed discount, but price history gives you the missing context about what the item has cost before.

If the status bar is nearly full and the deal timer is short, adding the item to your cart starts the 15 minute window. Do the price comparison before adding when possible, rather than letting a short timer make the decision for you. Prime events can add their own rules

During Prime Day or Prime Big Deal Days, Amazon says Lightning Deals are exclusive to Prime members. [1]

Prime Big Deal Days, held October 6 to 7, 2026, also had event specific timing: Amazon said its Today’s Big Deals drops launched at midnight, 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. PDT during that event. Those drop times belonged to that event and should not be treated as a year round Lightning Deal schedule. [4]

Coupons are also a separate promotion type from Lightning Deals, so if you are trying to understand an offer shown as a coupon instead, see our guide to Amazon coupons.

Lightning Deal discounts do not cover shipping and handling or taxes, and a return is refunded at the amount you actually paid. [2]

Frequently asked questions

How long do Amazon Lightning Deals last?

Amazon’s seller guide says Lightning Deals run for 4 to 12 hours, but the offer can effectively end sooner if all discounted units are claimed. The deal page also shows a timer so you can see how much time remains. [1] [3]

How long do I have to buy a Lightning Deal after adding it to my cart?

Amazon gives you 15 minutes to complete the purchase after adding the Lightning Deal to your cart. The order also has to be completed before the overall promotion ends. [1] [2]

Does joining an Amazon Lightning Deal waitlist guarantee the deal?

No. Amazon says waitlist places are limited, and joining does not mean you will receive the deal. If an opportunity becomes available, you still have to add the item within the allowed time and complete the purchase within 15 minutes. [1] [2]

Can I use 1-Click with a Lightning Deal?

No. Amazon’s Lightning Deal terms say you must redeem the offer through the Proceed to Checkout button from the Shopping Cart. Using 1-Click prevents the Lightning Deal from applying. [2]

Can I use a promo code with an Amazon Lightning Deal?

No. Amazon’s seller guide says deals such as Lightning Deals apply automatically, so a promo code does not apply to them. Treat the Lightning Deal price as a separate promotion rather than expecting a claim code to stack with it. [3]

What happens if a Lightning Deal sells out?

Amazon may show a Join Waitlist button when discounted units are already purchased or sitting in other carts. If the offer is fully finished, Amazon can show Sold Out or All Discounts Claimed, leaving only the regular price available. [1]
