Quick answer. A useful holiday shopping timeline starts with each gift’s deadline, not a guess about when its category will be cheapest. Prime Big Deal Days ran October 6 to 7, Black Friday falls November 27, Cyber Monday is November 30, Hanukkah begins December 4, and the first major USPS Christmas send-by date is December 17. Gifts that must ship deserve earlier decisions than digital or local gifts.

The 2026 dates that shape your gift plan

The calendar gives you firm planning points even when retailer schedules are unknown. Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and Christmas come from the federal holiday calendar, while USPS publishes its own recommended Christmas shipping dates. [1] [3]

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are derived from Thanksgiving. As of October 6, 2026, we have not found an Amazon announcement of its own Black Friday or Cyber Monday dates, so those calendar dates should not be read as Amazon’s announced sale schedule. Our Black Friday 2026 calendar separates those two ideas.

Stage one: now through early November

Use October to decide what you actually intend to buy. Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days took place October 6 and 7, but you do not need to turn an October event into a deadline for every holiday gift. [5] Start with a budget, a short list and the dates by which individual gifts must reach their recipients.

NRF says approximately two out of every five holiday shoppers have started browsing and buying before November in recent years, often to spread the budget, avoid last minute stress or avoid crowds. [2] Starting early can simply mean gathering information rather than buying everything now.

Record the recent price of gifts you are willing to wait on. Amazon’s price history feature sits next to the price and shows 30 and 90 day history, with a 365 day view rolling out when Amazon published its 2026 article. [4] Our guide to Amazon price history explains how to use that information without guessing about future prices.

Stage two: November 11 through Cyber Monday

Veterans Day and Singles Day both fall on Wednesday, November 11. They are separate events, so treat any shopping offer according to its own terms rather than assuming the shared date makes it part of one sale.

Thanksgiving then arrives on November 26, followed by Black Friday on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30. [3] You can use Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday deals as separate checkpoints instead of assuming one day has the better price.

If a gift must travel through the mail, this is a good point to start caring more about time as well as price. A gift ordered on Cyber Monday, November 30, leaves 18 days before the USPS Priority Mail send-by date of December 18.

For gifts without an urgent delivery need, keep comparing the current price with recent history. Amazon also says Alexa for Shopping can set a target price notification and create Deal Alerts. [5] Those tools can help with items you are willing to wait on rather than reopening the same pages repeatedly.

Stage three: early December and Hanukkah

Hanukkah begins December 4 and runs through December 12 in 2026, according to USPS. [1] That is earlier than the Christmas shipping dates later in the month, so a Hanukkah gift that needs to travel should be treated as having its own earlier deadline.

From December 4 to the December 17 Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail send-by date is 13 days. But a Christmas mailing deadline does not automatically work for a gift needed during Hanukkah. Work backward from the date the recipient actually needs the gift rather than from December 25.

December is also where waiting for another price drop becomes less attractive for shipped gifts. Waiting until the weekend of December 12 and 13 for a Priority Mail gift leaves only 5 to 6 days before the December 18 send-by date, and that arithmetic does not promise when a seller will ship.

Stage four: the Christmas shipping window

USPS recommends December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express when sending within the contiguous US for delivery before December 25. [1] USPS also warns that actual delivery can vary with origin, destination, acceptance time and other conditions, and advises sending earlier when possible.

Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, and USPS lists Kwanzaa as December 26 through January 1. [1] If you are still shopping late in the season, Christmas deals can be one place to check offers, but do not confuse a sale with a safe shipping deadline.

Sort every gift into one of three timing groups

The most useful way to organize the list is by what happens if you wait. Put gifts that must be shipped by a particular date in the first group. Those deserve the biggest time buffer, especially once you move into December.

The second group is made up of gifts that can wait for a price change. Record their recent prices, set alerts where available and compare again before ordering. The early holiday shopping guide and our Black Friday prep guide can help you think through that choice before the late November rush.

The third group is gifts with no shipping deadline, such as digital gifts or something you plan to pick up locally. Because a carrier does not need to move them to the recipient, they can stay flexible longer if that suits your schedule.

Do not move a gift from the first group into the second just because you hope the price will drop. Once delivery timing matters, protecting the time buffer may be more useful than waiting for an unknown future price.

What to skip while the calendar gets busier

Skip purchases that are mainly being driven by a sale label rather than your gift list. Nothing published supports claims that a certain product category is cheapest on a particular date, so use price history and your own deadline instead of trying to predict a perfect shopping day.

Also be careful when an unusually low price comes from an unfamiliar seller. The FTC recommends researching unfamiliar sellers, checking refund terms and paying by credit card when possible. It says not to pay a seller that demands gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or cryptocurrency. [6]

Frequently asked questions

When should I start holiday shopping in 2026?

Start planning in October if that gives you time to set a budget, make a gift list and record recent prices. You do not need to buy everything early. The more useful deadline is the date each gift must reach its recipient.

When is Black Friday 2026?

Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving on November 26. [3] As of October 6, we have not found an Amazon announcement of its own Black Friday or Cyber Monday schedule.

When is Cyber Monday 2026?

Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30, 2026. The date is derived from Thanksgiving on November 26. [3] Treat it as another price checkpoint rather than assuming it has the lowest price for a particular gift.

When does Hanukkah start in 2026?

Hanukkah begins Friday, December 4 and runs through December 12 in 2026, according to USPS. [1] Gifts that need to arrive during Hanukkah may need an earlier shopping and shipping plan than gifts intended for Christmas.

What is the USPS deadline for Christmas shipping in 2026?

For the contiguous US, USPS recommends December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express for delivery before Christmas. [1] Separate dates apply to some other destinations.

Should I wait for a price drop before buying a gift?

Wait only when the gift has enough time and you are comfortable with the risk of the price not changing. Price history and alerts can help with flexible purchases. A gift with a firm shipping deadline deserves a larger time buffer.

Which holiday gifts can I leave until later?

Digital gifts and items you plan to pick up locally do not have a carrier shipping deadline, so they can usually stay flexible longer. Shipped gifts should be planned around the date they need to arrive and the applicable carrier schedule.
